Baptism Personal Testimony

(if child, parent may fill out)

Three Basic Reason for Water Baptism

1. Jesus did it.
Matthew 3:13-17
V13 Jesus came purposefully to be baptized
V15 Jesus said the purpose was to fulfill all righteousness
V17 Jesus pleased the Father by being baptized

2. He commanded it.
Matthew 28:19
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”
* Yet not a “requirement” for Salvation –
Mark 16:16
“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.”
1 Corinthians 1:17
“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel…”

3. It was practiced in the Book of Acts & Taught by Paul.
Acts 2:38
“Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 10:47
“Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?””

We are Doing Two Things When We are Water Baptized

Demonstrating an Outward Symbol of Inward Transformation
Romans 6:5
“For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,”
Confessing Him Before Men
Matthew 10:32-33
“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.”

There is One Basic Requirement to be Water Baptized

Acts 8:36-38
“Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.”

Questions to Reflect On Prior to being Baptized:

  • Do you understand why we sin? (Rom 5:12)
  • Do you understand what sin is, the consequences of it, and why it separates us from God? (James 1:14-15; James 4:17; Rom. 6:23; 1 John 3:4)
  • Do you understand why Jesus is the only one who can cleanse us of our sin? (2 Cor. 5:21)
  • Do you understand how Jesus paid for sin? (1 Pet. 2:24)
  • Do you understand what it means to repent of our sin? (2 Cor. 7:10; Acts 3:19; Acts 26:20)
  • Do you understand what it means to confess our sin? (1 John 1:8-10)
  • Do you understand what it means to believe in Jesus having faith in what He did for us? (Jam 2:19; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; Rom. 10:8-13)
  • Do you understand what a new life in Christ looks like? (Rom. 8:1; Eph. 2:10; 1 John 2:6)
  • Do you understand what it means to be saved; what you are being “saved from” and “delivered to”? (Rom. 5:8-10; John 5:24; Eph. 2:4-7)
